Italgen investing in Balikesir, Turkey

In July 2008, Italgen acquired Bares Elektrik Uretim AS, a Turkish company holding the necessary permits to build a wind farm in Turkey, with a capacity of 142.5 MW and an expected annual production of about 470,000 MWh. [1] Italgen payed €32 Million for Bares Elektrik Uretim AS.[2]

The wind farm will be built within the Balikesir province in northwestern Turkey on a plateau dominated by constant winds. The plant is going to be close to the nodes interconnected through the national electricity distribution system. Through this project, Italgen aims to curb CO2 emissions by about 300,000 tons per year. Italgen’s interest in investing in Turkey stems from the significant growth experienced in recent years by the Turkish electricity market, supported by the guidelines provided in a recently passed act on renewable energy.
