Sony Ericsson president Nordberg nominated for Vestas chairmanship

DENMARK: Vestas has announced plans to nominate current Sony Ericsson president Bert Nordberg to replace outgoing chairman Bent Carlsen.

Last week, Carlsen announced he would not be standing for reelection at Vestas' AGM in March. Also leaving is deputy chairman Torsten Rasmussen and board member Freddy Frandsen.

Vestas said it is also nominating president of the Sandvik Mining Corporation, Lars Olof Josefsson, and vice president for corporate responsibility at telecoms company Telia Sonera, Eija Pitkanen, to replace Rasmussen and Frandsen respectively.

Out of the three, only Josefsson has worked in the energy sector with roles at both Siemens' industrial turbine division and Alstom Power. He was president at both companies.

The remaining board members are standing for reelection. The election of a new chairman will have a potential impact on the future of Vestas chief executive Ditlev Engel who was previously supported by Carlsen.

Nordberg has been president of Sony Ericsson since 2009 and has been with the company since 1996. The mobile manufacturer had a difficult 2011 with losses of €247 million announced in December. In October, Sony announced it was taking full control of the division.

Carlsen, Rasmussen and Frandsen's decision was announced as Vestas prepared to publish its annual report for 2011. The company has failed to meet its own revenue targets and has been forced to issue two profit warnings in recent months.

In January and prior to Carlsen's resignation there were reports a number of senior investors in the company wanted Vestas board member and FLSmidth chief executive Jorgen Huno to step into his shoes.
