Wind energy excites southern town

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

BELEN, Hatay - Anatolia News Agency

The turbines of a wind energy power plant owned by Güriş Holding in Belen, a town in the southern city of Hatay, have started to rise despite occasional adverse wind conditions.

The construction of the power plant, which was a 51 million euro investment, is ongoing with a team of 65 people, including 15 Italian citizens. As the initial part of the financing phase, the wind turbine, related equipment and energy transmission equipment concerning the other main substation unit, obtained from Vestas, an Italian firm, were taken to the power plant site in Belen.

Wind power is the most developed and convenient type of energy for commercial purposes among renewable energies, said Arda Şeker, project engineer at Belen Electric Generation, a subsidiary of Güriş Holding, which has undertaken the installation of the power plant and wind-energy generation.

Noting that the world is moving toward this energy resource rapidly and that there were noteworthy incentives in many countries, Şeker said Turkey had significant potential in the field. In Belen, he said, the firm is excited to generate energy from wind, which is environmentally friendly.

The team at the power plant is preparing to begin operations in September despite the adverse conditions. The Italian team is working to assemble and install the turbine while the Turkish team is working on the installation of the main substation unit and energy transmission lines.

Annual capacity

Two wind turbines have been installed at the power plant, where operations concerning assembling and installing other towers, speed converters, electrical-electronic elements and equipment such as impellers and the laying of underground cables are ongoing.

The energy collected at the main substation center will be connected to İskenderun-1 and Antakya-2 lines via a transmission line.

The Belen Wind Farm Project, one of the projects of the Belen Electric Generation Co., is expected to generate 95.7 million kWh/year of electricity annually. The firm received a 49-year generation license for the plant about two and a half years ago.

The power plant, which has a capacity of 30 MW of energy with 10 wind turbines, will begin generating electricity in September.

Established in 2002, Belen Electric Generation aims to establish, commission and lease electrical energy production facilities; produce energy; and sell produced electrical energy. With 52 years of experience, Güriş operates in construction, hot forging, steel, energy, cement and tourism.
