Vestas has received an order for the Mersin project consisting of 11 units of the V90-3.0 MW wind turbine to be installed in Turkey.
The order comprises delivery, transportation and installation of the wind turbines, a VestasOnline® Business SCADA system, as well as a five-year service and availability agreement. Delivery of the turbines is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2009 and the project is expected to be completed by the beginning of 2010.
The project will be located in the Mersin province, in southern Turkey, on the Mediterranean coast between Antalya and Adana.
The order has been placed by the Turkish company Akdeniz Elektrik Üretim A.Ş., a subsidiary of the Agaoglu Group, which is one of Turkey’s largest group of companies working in the areas of construction, tourism, service and energy.
“We are very satisfied to have been selected as the supplier of Akdeniz Elektrik Üretim A.Ş.’s first wind project in Turkey, and we look forward to a long-lasting collaboration between our two companies,” says Juan Araluce, President of Vestas Mediterranean.
“The Agaoglu Group is very interested in contributing to the development of the wind energy industry in Turkey and this 33 MW project is just the first phase of a larger future project,” says Ali Ibrahim Agaoglu, President of the Agaoglu Group.
“Recent years have seen the start of a wind energy boom in Turkey, and we are very proud to take part in this development. We are very happy with this new project, as we are continuously working on expanding our activities in this market,” concludes Juan Araluce.
With an estimated annual production of approx 95 GWh, the Agaoglu wind power plant will save the environment from more than 43,000 tons of CO2 and will be able to meet the electricity need of more than 15,000 Turkish households.
The Vestas Turkey office was officially established in January 2008. The office handles sales, project management and service activities in the country. As per 31 December 2008, Vestas has installed 70 turbines in Turkey corresponding to a capacity of around 170 MW.
